Preserve New York, a grant program of the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts, funded a Village of Liberty project for a nomination to the State and National Registers of Historic Places, for the historic district in downtown Liberty . The comprehensive nomination, which included a draft district map, narrative history and survey of included buildings, has now been completed and submitted. A decision to list the historic district was made by the New York State Register in September 2005 and listing on the National Register should take place in 2006.
In July, Neil Larson, the consultant who prepared the nomination, presented his research to an interested audience of about thirty people at the Liberty Museum. Details included slides of Liberty 's architectural and business history and explanations of the historic periods of architecture represented in Liberty 's downtown district.
By recognizing Liberty 's unique identity, the downtown historic district will boost our ongoing efforts to beautify and revitalize the Main Street commercial and civic area. Listing on the National and State Registers imposes no restrictions on current or future owners of property within the historic district. It can add to the value of individual properties and opens opportunities for property owners to obtain assistance with preservation projects.
